The City of Helsinki is organizing an international design competition for Kruunusillat (Crown Bridges). The purpose is to find a high-quality solution for an environment extremely demanding from the landscape and cultural-historical perspectives.

It is an international invited competition whose participants will be selected through an application procedure according to Finland’s public procurements legislation.

As Helsinki has been selected as the World Design Capital 2012, this competition for the Kruunusillat bridges is one of Helsinki’s World Design Capital projects that will generate considerable international attention.

The Kruunusillat bridges shall have a positive effect on Helsinki’s image and shall be a worthy legacy for future.

Kruunusillat as connection

The Kruunusillat bridges are a traffic connection currently being designed between Kruununhaka and Kruunuvuorenranta in Helsinki, the capital city of Finland. The main users of the Kruunusillat bridges will be trams, cyclists and pedestrians. The traffic connection shall also accommodate service and emergency vehicles.

Kruununhaka is an existing city district located on the eastern side of Helsinki’s city centre; Kruunuvuorenranta is a residential area currently being designed three kilometers further to the east, behind the Kruunuvuorenselkä sea area.

The competition task includes the conceptualization and investigation at the outline plan level of the Kalasatama - Korkeasaari – Palosaari - Kruunuvuorenranta traffic connection. The connection between Kruununhaka and Kalasatama is not part of the competition area. The main emphasis of the task is the design of the connection between Kruunuvuorenranta and Palosaari.
